Annual Presentation 2015

gary-murphyFOLLOWING the sudden passing of our beloved friend Gary Murphy on April 12, 2014, the Clann Eireann Football Committee are proud to announce that a new trophy for Senior Footballer of the Year will be established in his honour.

The inaugural Gary Murphy Memorial Cup will be presented at this year’s Annual Dinner, which will be held at the Social Club on February 21. The evening will start at 7.30pm and food will be provided by way of a buffet.
On the night, awards will also be presented to the ladies senior football team as well as the minor teams – both male and female. There will be entertainment afterwards with Lurgan comic Mickey Bartlett the special guest for the evening.

Tickets are £15 and can be purchased behind the bar.

To begin to tell Gary’s story and his lifelong affiliation with Clann Eireann would be an impossible task. There are too many memorable tales. There are too many moments of laughter. If you didn’t share a dressing room with Gary and battle with him on the pitch, there is no doubt that you encountered his warm presence and caring nature in another capacity.

It is particularly poignant that shortly before Gary left us, he assumed the role of ‘team mentor’ for the senior footballers. After serving the club for close to three decades on the field, he just had to be involved.

Whether you were the oldest head on the team or a minor player called up for his first training session, Gary was always there to help. He knew when you needed a stern talking to but his greatest quality was shielding you from harm with an arm around the shoulder. Gary’s qualities were rare and as such, a day hasn’t gone by where he has escaped our thoughts.

While Gary’s passing rocked our club to the core, the Clann Eireann community sourced strength from one another. We united and faced adversity together. It is therefore vital that we unite once again at this year’s annual presentation, as a mark of respect to one of our greatest sons.

The Gary Murphy Memorial Cup will be an on-going reminder of the impact ‘The Murph’ had on so many people’s lives. His legacy will never be forgotten. He walks shoulder-to-shoulder with us every time we pull on one of those orange jerseys and the memories we shared together will serve as a platform for the future improvement and success of Clann Eireann.

I guess there’s only one thing left to say: “February 21, Welcome To The Weekend!”
