U14 Championship Semi Final

Date: 6 Jul 2010 / Viewed: 84 times

The U14s travelled to a blustery Collegeland for a semi final championship match against Armagh Harps. The Harps, with the wind at their backs, dominated the opening exchanges and it was against the run of play when Michael Corden, receiving a pass from Matthew Mulholland, opened the scoring with a nicely taken goal. The Harps hit back immediately with a point and followed this up with their first goal and another point. Conal Patterson then converted a 13 metre free, Adam Kelly being fouled. Harps continued to press forward and claimed a second goal on 13 minutes. Matthew Mullholland, soloing from 50 metres out, replied with a fine point. Despite a good defensive block, the first of many, the Harps pointed for the third time. Adam Kelly was fouled going forward and Jamie McAtavee kept Clann Eireann in touch with his first point, a 30 metre free against the strong breeze. Harps went 4 up with another one pointer on 30 minutes but Jamie reduced the lead with another pointed free going into half time, leaving 3 between them at the break: Clann Eireann 1-4 Armagh Harps 2-4.
With the wind at their backs, Clann Eireann immediately set about their opponents and within a minute were rewarded with a goal to draw level, Odhran Downey’s effort coming off the crossbar and finished to the net by an alert Conor McClure. Straight after the goal Matthew, raced in from the wing and pointed to put Clann Eireann in front for the first time. The Harps quickly equalised and then went back in front by a point, despite another great defensive block, this time by Patrick Sheehan. The Harps were far from finished and on several occasions Clann Eireann's goalie, Cillian Lavery was called upon to make some timely interventions. Patrick Sheehan, once again, made a telling tackle and then released Matthew for a break out of a besieged defence. He in turn found Michael Doran who equalised with Clann Eireann's sixth point. The Harps nudged ahead again on 12 minutes but Adam Kelly levelled with a point on 13. The outcome of the game was in the balance at this stage with both teams vying for a decisive breakthrough. Jamie McAtavee, from centre half Daniel Thompson, edged Clann Eireann in front, with a point on 16 minutes. Then game the breakthrough that Clann Eireann sought. Conor McClure goaled from a speculative long ball in. The Harps however, refused to give in and pointed a couple of minutes later. They continued to press forward but were denied a goal by a great stop from Clann Eireann keeper Cillian and this spurred the rest of the team on. Adam was fouled going forward and Clann Eireann claimed another point. Conal Patterson then released Jamie for Clann Eireann's tenth point. The Harps were under severe pressure as the game entered the final ten minutes. Jamie then goaled twice in quick succession to leave the opposition reeling. A contender for man of the match, Michael Corden, hit a super point with 5 minutes to go. Dylan Hatton, then stepped up to coolly convert a penalty for another goal. Jamie added a final point to put Clann Eireann through to the final.
A storming finish saw the U14s over the line. However, the foundation for victory was laid in the first half, when against the strong wind, the team, as a unit, worked tirelessly and patiently to keep in touch with the Harps and were only 3 points down going into the break, providing the platform to go on to claim the win. Congratulations to the boys on another great team performance and now they must put this victory behind them and prepare for the stern test that awaits them in the final, against South Armagh favourites Killeavey.
Result: Clann Eireann 6-12 Armagh Harps 2-8
