Oliver
The recent production of Oliver staged by the Clann Eireann Youth Club Drama Group was a great success. The show was very well attended and reports from the audience were very complimentary. The children and young people who starred in the show were excellent and it was obvious that they had worked very hard to perfect their performances. The adult supporting cast was also greatly praised and the one special feature of the show was that the adults were uniformly complimented on their portrayal of the main characters. The sets, costumes, lighting and sound all helped to recreate the atmosphere of the period. This is the ninth production of the Drama Group and every year the shows strive to improve. These shows are made possible due to the efforts of a large group of people who give of their time freely and unselfishly to allow the talent of the children who attend the Youth Club to shine. It is hard work however, I'm sure anyone who attended the show will agree it was well worth it. As one of our adult cast members said “You could not pay for the fun and community spirit generated by these shows. The camaraderie between all the cast members young and old alike is very special and benefits all those involved in the show".

Recent Visit to Stormont
Below is a report, by Tiarna McCorry, on the recent trip to stormont. There is also a link to photos posted in the gallery.

On Thursday 31st January, 10 youth members, including myself, attended the Young People and Democracy Day at Stormont. Representing Clann Eireann Youth Club we made our way to the Long Gallery where we were met by around 140 other young people. We were all welcomed by the Deputy speaker Francie Molloy and introduced to a number of people which included Alban McGuinness, Naomi Long and Daithi McKay who had all been invited to sit on a question and answer panel. This panel began just shortly after 11 o'clock and this gave young people, like myself, a chance to express our own views and challenge local politicians about their thoughts and ideas. We each thought of questions and a number of topics from student fees , suicide and mental health to youth provisions and budget cuts were raised. Some, I thought, could give the politicians a run for their money with the continuous feedback from the groups.
We then had a chance to meet local MLAs from our own constituency, unfortunately only one managed to turn up from the Upper Bann area. We met with Sam Gardiner and as we questioned him he spoke freely about not only politics but his own life and Lurgan town. This was a good opportunity for us to raise issues such as the provision of facilities for the young people in the Lurgan area.
We also met many others including Mark Durkan (SDLP), John McAlister (UUP), and Paul Maskey (SINN FEIN). They gave their honest opinion and advice on whichever topic we decided to raise, e.g. The Dickson Plan and the Irish Language Act. This day had been organised by the British Youth Forum and overall I felt that this had been a very enjoyable and informative day in which young people could express their opinions and it also gave them an insight into the life of a politician.

Open Night
Registration & Open Night
Clann Eireann held it’s first ever Registration & Open Night in the Youth Club last Tuesday. Guest speaker was All-Ireland winning manager, Joe Kernan.

All the various sections within the club, along with Sean Treacy’s Hurling Club, had set up their stalls on the main floor, each providing plenty of photographic and written information, through the use of display boards, laptops, pamphlets and the newly produced Clann Eireann Booklet.

Some, such as the Jeet Kune Do and Cycling, provided ‘Hands On’ experience for the large crowd of children and adults that had turned up that evening, while the Drama Group and then the Irish Dancers performed on the main stage. Another excellent feature was the DVD, produced by Barry Coleman, which ran continuously on a screen highlighting some of the many aspects and memorable moments of the club’s recent past.

Joe Kernan spoke briefly to the large crowd that had gathered and then answered some questions from the floor. One of the more notable questions was “Who was the easiest player to train?”, Joe replied that players such as McGeeney,McGrane and Marsden were all great to work with but the one person who did everything asked of him with a smile was someone that we might have heard of, someone called-- ‘Francy Bellew’. A huge roar went up at this announcement.

Joe then finished the evening by going around all the sections and chatting to the coaches and representatives and at the same time signing autographs for the many children and adults who greeted him.

All in all a very successful and enjoyable first ever event. Congratulations to Stephan, Dee, Mario and Roisin in preparing the hall for that night and also to Brian and all those who made it happen.
