The week began with an away match to Belfast Ladies 3rds, and due to unforeseen circumstances the team had to take court with only 6 players. Clann Eireann lined out with no WD so the defence of GK Karen Crossy and GD Niamh Mc Kanvangh would be pushed to the limit for all four quarters.
The first quarter didn’t go well as it took a while for the team to adjust to a player down. However the second quarter was a major improvement with relentless work from both C Roisin Leonard and WA Sinéad Mc Dermott, as a result the team were only losing by 3 come half time.
Excellent shooting from GA Aine Purdy and GS Fiona Mc Kavanagh kept the girls in the game in the third quarter. However the fourth quarter was to prove to be the girls downfall, simple mistakes cost the girls dearly probably due to the fact that all the girls worked extremely hard for the full 60 minutes, and for the first time this season gave a team performance that shows that these girls deserve the promotion they are working so hard for.
Final Score - Belfast Ladies 3rds 49 – 39 Clann Eireann 1sts
The next match was against top of the league Hollywood who have remained unbeaten all season. First quarter the teams were scoring point for point. Hollywood’s GS height was causing a headache for Clann Eireann, however Clann Eireann shoots Amy Brennan and Aine Purdy were not missing a shot. Second quarter came the change of Roisin Purdy for Karen Crossy in order to counteract the aerial power of Hollywood. This seemed to work as Roisin and Pauline Mc Geown were beginning to break down Hollywood’s attack.
Come the third quarter Hollywood started to panic as the three mid court players Niamh Mc Kanvangh, Roisin Leonard and Sinéad Mc Dermott worked tirelessly to break Hollywood’s possession and score on the break. By the beginning of the last quarter you could see that Hollywood had lost confidence as the Clann Eireann girls kept pilling on the scores. An important win for Clann Eireann as now the possibility of a league win might be within their grasp.
Final Score - Hollywood 44 – 59 Clann Eireann 1sts
This week seen the return of the Clann Eireann second’s after the Christmas break. The girls were faced with a home draw against Causeway a team they had yet to play therefore didn’t know what to expect. The first quarter the girls took a while to warm up and get their head in the game although they were leading at the break. The second quarter was much better as the Causeway attack was getting broke down due to the excellent defence of Sarah Bell and Captain Avoureen Coleman and come the half time break the girls were leading by 7.
The third quarter seen the break away as excellent shooting from Emily Mc Conville and Catherine O Loan was crushing the Causeway defence. However in the fourth quarter it was clear that Causeway were not giving up and they started to pressure the girls causing them to make crucial mistakes. WD Aisling Mc Crory and C Emma Maye along with WA Niamh Mc Daid helped see the girls to end with relentless work up and down the court to make sure that the girls were walking away from nothing less than a win.
Final Score - Clann Eireann 2nds 34 – 23 Causeway
