Clann Eireann 1sts V Westside 1sts

Clann Eireann took on second placed Westside on Monday night in St Michaels. The game was tightly contested with both teams on great form. The first quarter was more or less goal for goal until Westside broke Clann Eireann in the last minute of play to lead 12 – 11 at the break. Superb play from Roisin Leonard and Amy Brennan in the middle of the court pushed Clann Eireann to recover the break that they had previously lost; as a result the scores were tied at half time.

The girls went out in the second half knowing that they could step it up another gear and that they did. Constant defensive pressure from Roisin Purdy, Pauline Mc Geown and Sinéad Leonard broke down the play of Westside in which Clann Eireann punished them through excellent shooting from Aine Purdy and Fiona Mc Cabe; as a result the girls finished the third quarter with an 11 point lead. The girls knew that such a lead could be quickly overturned in the final stages and had to play as a team and keep their discipline to see out the game.

The girls definitely produced their game if the season so far which a final score of Clann Eireann 1sts 52 – 40 Westside 1sts.

Holywood 2nds V Clann Eireann 2nds

The seconds took on Holywood 2nds in Belfast on Tuesday night in the penultimate league game for the first half of the season. Holywood started off the better team racing into a 4 – 0 lead in the opening 5 minutes of the game. However Clann Eireann began to find their feet and fought their way back into the game and trailing by 1 point after the first quarter. The second quarter Clann Eireann piled on the pressure with great work from Ellen Brazier and Avoureen Coleman, it was clear Holywood had started to panic and their game broke down.

The girls took advantage of this developing great attacking play from middle court players Ashleen Mc Crory, Emily Mc Conville and Kate Leonard, and with brilliant score from Catherine O Loan the girls went into the break leading by 11 points. However Clann Eireann took their foot of the pedal in the third quarter letting Holywood come back into the game, with their opponents outscoring them. With the introduction of fresh legs in the final quarter helped Clann Eireann see the game out, with Seana Haughey helping the defence break down play and with excellent shooting from Claire Skelton and Orlagh Mc Conville, Clann Eireann finished off the game with a result of Holywood 2nds 33 – 45 Clann Eireann 2nds.

Dromore 2nds V Clann Eireann 2nds

This week saw Clann Eireann 2nds having to play two games in two nights as a result of the shield competition, a hard ask for any team. To make the task even tougher for the girls they were drawn against Dromore 2nds who are in the league above. With sore legs from the night before Clann Eireann started off slowly as Dromore broke our first two centre passes, and raced into a 5 – 1 lead, indication that it may have been a long night ahead for the girls. Dromore kept their pace up and lead 14 – 10 at the end of the first 15 minutes.

The first 5 minutes of the second quarter became a continuation of the first with Dromore pressing up the court at great pace too which the girls could not keep up; their opponents had now gained a lead of 8 points. However the girls knew that if they dug deep they could change the game around. Outstanding defensive play from Sarah Bell, Avoureen Coleman and Fionnuala Rodgers caused Dromore’s play to beak down and quick thinking balls into our attacking circle saw Clann Eireann turn the game around and lead by 3 at half time.

By this stage the girls where feeling the effects of the night before but knew they could not let the game get away from them now they had developed a lead. Dromore had the first centre of the third quarter and with great effort from Kate Leonard and Ashleen Mc Crory in the centre third saw them intercept and increase the lead for Clann Eireann. For the rest of the third quarter it was pretty even with both teams having consecutive scores. The final 15 minutes produced a display from Clann Eireann that no one expected, just when you thought they had no energy left they stepped up a gear once more.

Both shooters Catherine O Loan and Orlagh Mc Conville turned out a performance that was fantastic in which they never missed one shot in the last quarter to leave a final score of Dromore 2nds 37 – 56 Clann Eireann 2nds. A brilliant performance from the girls to which they now progress to the second round, and judging by this performance the girls surely now have to be up there as being one of the favourites for the competition.
