Mixed Fortunes for U16 Boys

Clann Eireann had both the A and B U16 teams competing last weekend. On the Saturday past, the A team travelled to Dromore Co. Tyrone where they played in the Quater Final of the Paul McGirr Ulster U16 Championship. The opposition were the Monaghan Champions, Scotstown. In a game marred by the constant rain, the Armagh Champions struggled to match their Monaghan counterparts. On a few occasions the Lurgan lads showed glimpses of the form that had secured the Armagh Championship for them but those events were too few and far between and the dominence of the Farney boys is reflected in the final score of Scotstown 1-17 Clann Eireann 1-6.

The following day saw the B Team take centre stage. Once again the rain was ever present as the U16 Bs played Newtown Emmets in the final of the All County Div 3b League at Grange. Clann Eireann had the breeze in their backs in the first half and steadily pulled away from the opposition and were in front 2-5 to 0-6 at the break. Newtown Emmets, with the wind behind them for the second period, scored a fine goal straight after the restart. Clann Eireann however, immediately replied with a 3 pointer of their own and when Newtown goaled again the Lurgan Boys promptly wiped out that effort with a goal of their own. This was to be the pattern for the rest of the game, an Emmets attacked was immediately followed by one from Clann Eireann. Newtown did mange to whittle the deficit down to two points but Clann Eireann defiantly held on to take the honours and the brave effort from the Emmets was thwarted as the game ended 4-8 to 3-9 in Clann Eireann’s favour. Congratulations to them, commiserations to Newtown Emmets.
