Andy Kimura visits Northern Ireland to promote the legacy of Bruce Lee
Seattle based Jeet Kune Do instructor, Andy Kimura visited Northern Ireland recently to teach a two day seminar on Jun Fan Gung Fu / Jeet Kune Do.

Andy is the son of Taky Kimura, Bruce Lee’s highest ranked student and closest friend. His father was chosen by Bruce Lee to be the Instructor at the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in Seattle more than forty years ago and has since 1973 has been the caretaker of Bruce Lee’s grave.

Andy has trained with his father and other top martial artists since he was a young boy and both he and his father have remained faithful to Bruce and his teachings and have established a worldwide respect for his art.

Local instructor Martin O’Neill met Taky and Andy several years ago and in 2003 his JKD Ireland group had the pleasure of hosting a series of lectures and seminars, given by Taky and Andy. Those who attended then where not disappointed and the same can certainly be said this time around.

The seminar was an absolute hive of activity. The turn out each day was fantastic and attracted a large crowd from numerous martial arts backgrounds. Andy taught from personal notes given to his father by Bruce Lee and over the two days the students learnt many techniques and aspects of the art. Topics covered included the four ranges, five ways of attack, trapping hands and grappling. The students were instructed on their proper application and were also provided with realistic and efficient drills to demonstrate their effectiveness. They also had the opportunity to spar and put into practice all they had covered.

Both the hands on approach and the professionalism adopted by Sifu Andy Kimura were a completely refreshing experience. This was reflected in the way the students applied themselves to their training and in the regard and respect they showed to those around them.

What everyone, from complete novice to advanced practitioner, got were two unbelievable days of top class tuition. The insights provided were remarkable and the economy and simplistic efficiency of what the students were shown was truly inspiring. And whilst physically challenging, requiring lots of effort and sweat, this seminar was an extremely enjoyable event.

The seminar finished with all the students being presented with a certificate of attendance. Both Martin O’Neill, JKD Ireland, and Alain De Preter, ASMA vzw Belgium, were honoured to receive their Level 4 Certificate in Jun Fan Gung Fu.

Thanks are due to all involved for making this seminar the success it was and we hope to have Andy return to these shores at some time in the near future.
