ACL Div II Clann Eireann v Ballyhegan Davitts

Date: 20 Jun 2009 / Viewed: 79 times

Ballhegan travelled to Clann Eireann Park on Friday night looking for some much needed league points. They came away with both. After last week’s fine win against Tir na nÓg, the home team produced another of their Jekyll and Hyde displays. Admittedly, there were quite a few regulars who had gone sightseeing in Amsterdam but those available were quite capable of securing a win. Instead a lack lustre performance was the order of the day.
It was the visiting team, as is customary in recent Clann Eireann home matches that started off brightly. They had three points on the scoreboard before Clann Eireann raised a white flag for a well taken Sean McDermot point. Ballyhegan then added a forth from a free way out on the sideline. Ryan reduced the deficit to two with a point on seven minutes, having received the ball from Mark. Then Ballyhegan seized their chance when a poor Clann Eireann sideline kick was interceped and the ball was moved quickly into the centre for an early shot on goal that went beyond the diving Sean and into the bottom right corner. The score now stood at 1-4 to 0-2 to the visitors. They then tagged on two more points, both from frees, before Ryan replied with a free of his own which was followed by a nice 30 metre point from Mark McCann. Clann Eireann were struggling all over the field at this stage of the game. The high ball into the full forward line wasn't yielding anything and the defenders were prone to some sloppy play, giving the ball away cheaply and conceding too many unnecessary frees. There were to be four more scores in this half, two to each team. Ballyhegan's both came from frees, Clann Eireann had one free scored by Ryan and the other point came from Mark McCann which left the half time score at:
Clann Eireann 0-6 Ballyhegan 1-8
Ryan added another pointed free, soon after the restart but Ballyhegan replied with two of their own. Then, with about 10 minutes gone, Danny Shanks was booked for the second time and had to leave the field. This was to prove fatal to Clann Eireann's ambitions of winning this match. Danny had been performing well against former county star Paddy McKeever and with his dismissal the Ballyhegan player found himself with a lot more time on the ball and consequently he began to have a greater influence on proceedings. Clann Eireann's play was now littered with mistakes, fumbling when in pocession, poor passing and all round cumbersome build ups in attack. The game itself deterioted into a stuttering, foul ridden affair, with all too many stoppages. Ballyhegan had their tails up and notched up the next three scores, two from frees. Entering the last ten minutes Clann Eireann had a mini revival, scoring the next four points, all frees, with Michael Shanks claiming one and Ryan the other three. However, it was to be too little, too late as Ballyhegan finished the game of as a contest with their second goal in the last minute of normal time. Ryan pointed the final score, another free, deep into injury time which left the result at:
Clann Eireann 0-12 Ballyhegan 2-13.

A game to quickly forget with nobody outstanding during this performance. Michael Moore and Danny, until his dismissal, were probably the pick of the defenders. Mark and Dee, at midfield, kept going until the end, Mark at centre-half forward did reasonably well, given that this was his first full game in a long time and top scorer Ryan found the going tough against the doubling up of defenders on him, especially when Ballyhegan had the spare man. It is worth noting that both teams scored 8 points from frees, an indication of the poor fare that was served up as Ballyhegan left the field worthy winners on this occasion.

ACL Div II Clann Eireann v Tir na nOg

Date: 14 Jun 2009 / Viewed: 98 times

After the fine away win over Granemore which was followed by the disappointing defeat at home to Madden, Clann Eireann’s next fixture was Tir na nÓg at home. The game at the start had a bit of the déjà vu about it. The home team, as against Madden, took a while to realise that the ball had been thrown in. In fact, the first three points were landed by the visitors as they waltzed through the home defence leaving Clann Eireann trailing in their wake. Ryan eventually scored the first with a 20 metre free after 10 minutes. Tir na nÓg replied with a point to keep three in front before Ryan got his first from play, about 30 metres out. Clann Eireann were now up to speed and although still struggling around the middle, Tir na nÓg seemed to be winning all the loose ball, they were more involved and the visitors were no longer getting it all their own way. The defence had tightened up and Danny Shanks was reading the game well, was constantly in the right spot to intercept and then start an attack. The match at this stage was pretty even with both teams looking to gain the advantage, this was to fall to the homesters. Centre-half forward Conor McKavanagh(Scud) gathered the ball from Declan, on the stand side. He then ran 50 metres, selling a few dummy passes on the way, before he released the ball to Ryan who was coming through the centre and who promptly crashed the ball to the back of the net. Clann Eireann were now in the ascendancy, Ryan pointed another and Scud scored the fourth point before Tir na nÓg replied with a point of their own. The last five minutes of the half belonged to Clann Eireann as Scud’s brother Daniel helped himself to a fine point before Ryan lobbed over a great score from 30 metres out on the left touchline, to leave the score at

Half time: Clann Eireann 1 – 6 Tir na n Óg 0 – 5

The second half began during the remnants of a downpour. Both teams were instantly soaked and both sets of players found it near impossible to get a hold of the ball. Tir na nÓg opened the scoring with a pointed free on 2 minutes and for the next 5 minutes or so the ball skidded around the field until it came to Ryan, way out on the right wing. He looked up and delivered a perfect pass across the front of the visitor’s goal where Conor Mc Kavanagh rose up to dispatch the ball to the net. The Portadown team added another point to their tally which was followed by a well worked point from Michael Shanks, having received a perfect lay off from the Bomber Byrnes. At this point the local boys were working really hard at keeping the scoring chances of the visitors to a minimum. Some clever kick outs from Sean, some excellent tackling from the defenders and some great catches around the middle had up to now provided the platform for the forwards to go on and win the game. However, Tir na nÓg hadn’t given up the ghost just yet and tagged on 2 more minors before Ryan, receiving the ball from James, scored his second and Clann Eireann’s third goal.
Tir na nÓg again hit back with 2 points but the game was slipping away from them and Scud notched up the final score, following a good move which included Conor Bell, Michael McConville and the evergreen James. A much better all round home performance although the slow start is still a cause for concern.

Final Score: Clann Eireann 3 – 8 Tir na nÓg 0 - 11
