With this weekends departure of the clubs Handball Squad travelling to Calgary, Canada for the 2015 World Championships, the group of players, coaching staff, parents and mentors met with some of the handball sections local sponsors for a number of presentations.
Meeting in Clann Eireann Social club the travelling party had the opportunity to meet and thank those individuals and organisations who have assisted us in our attempts to fundraise for the upcoming World Championships. Present on the night were Mr Sean Lenehan, representing Lurgan Credit Union, as well as Mr Noel Hegarty from The Gaa Store who presented the players and coaching staff with full playing skips for the Championships, which will insure that our players certainly look smart in club colours as they take to the courts in Calgary. Donal Mc Carthy Chairman of Clann Eireann GAC presented the players with personal donations from the club.
With some of the young players already World Champions after the last highly successful campaign on home soil in Dublin in 2012 ,they go with everyone’s best wishes in the hope of defending their titles and possibly gaining one or two more . Once again our Men’s Senior Player Charley Shanks will compete with the big guns of World Handball in the Men’s Open.
Club members and indeed the wider community can follow the progress of the squad through the two weeks of competition via the clubs facebook page. The evening concluded with what one can only describe as a very generous indeed inspirational example of one small club section supporting another when Clann Eireann Golf Society made a donation of £500 to the Handball Squad to assist them in travelling and competing in Calgary . This donation came about as the result of a recent Golf Open Fundraiser undertaken by the golfing fraternity. Mr Eugene Mc Atamney was on hand to make the presentation to Peadar Mc Mahon. The handball section ,players ,coaching staff ,parents and supporters would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for this most generous donation to all from the Golfing Society and it can only be cited as an excellent example of one small section supporting another in a spirit of unselfish co operation and sportsmanship, which can only be seen as an example to everyone.
